How to Build a Deck
Building a deck is one of the most rewarding outdoor projects. It's also one of the most regulated — pull a permit, check setbacks, and follow your local code.
Safety firstFootings must go below your local frost line, and the ledger board must be flashed properly. Both shortcuts are deck-killers — and code violations.

What You'll Need
Circular saw and miter saw
Drill / impact driver
Post hole digger or auger
Level (4 ft) and string line
Joist hangers and exterior screws
Pressure-treated lumber or composite
Concrete for footings
Flashing tape
Step-by-Step
Plan and permitSketch dimensions, choose materials, and pull a building permit. Confirm setbacks and any HOA rules.
Install the ledgerBolt a pressure-treated ledger to the house framing. Flash above and behind it to keep water out of the wall.
Dig and pour footingsAuger holes below the frost line, set tubes, drop in rebar, and pour concrete. Set post bases while wet.
Set the posts and beamsStand posts plumb on the post bases, cut to height, and notch or bracket beams on top.
Hang the joistsAttach joist hangers to the ledger and beam, then drop 2x joists in at 16" on center.
Lay the deckingStart at the house with the first decking board, space boards with consistent gaps, and stagger end joints over joists.
Trim the edgesSnap a chalk line at the deck's outer edge and cut all decking flush with a circular saw.
Install railingsBolt rail posts to the rim joist (no notching), then attach top rails, balusters, and the bottom rail to code height.
Seal or stainLet the wood dry a few weeks, then apply a quality exterior stain or sealer. Reapply every 1–3 years.
