How to Fix a Leaky Faucet

A constantly dripping faucet wastes water and can stain the sink. Most leaks come from a worn washer, O-ring, or cartridge — and the repair is one of the easiest plumbing fixes you can do at home.

Safety firstAlways turn off the water supply before you touch the faucet. Plug the drain with a rag so small screws don't disappear down it.

What You'll Need

  • Adjustable wrench
  • Phillips & flat screwdriver
  • Replacement cartridge, washer, or O-ring kit
  • Plumber's grease
  • Rag and small bowl

Step-by-Step

  1. Shut off the waterClose the hot and cold shut-off valves under the sink. Turn the faucet on to bleed any pressure and confirm the water is off.
  2. Remove the handlePry off the decorative cap, then unscrew the handle screw and pull the handle straight up off the stem.
  3. Pull out the cartridge or stemUse an adjustable wrench to loosen the retaining nut, then pull the cartridge out. Note which way it faces.
  4. Replace the worn partsSwap the O-rings, washer, or full cartridge for the matching replacement. Coat new O-rings with a thin layer of plumber's grease.
  5. Reassemble the faucetDrop the new cartridge in the same orientation, tighten the retaining nut, reinstall the handle, and tighten the screw.
  6. Turn the water back onSlowly open the shut-off valves, run the faucet, and check for drips at the spout and base.
