How to Install a Light Switch
Replacing a tired old switch with a new toggle, rocker, or dimmer is one of the easiest electrical jobs in the house — as long as you respect the breaker.
Safety firstTurn off the breaker for the circuit, then use a non-contact voltage tester to confirm the wires are dead before touching them.
What You'll Need
- Non-contact voltage tester
- Phillips and flat screwdriver
- Wire strippers
- Needle-nose pliers
- New switch and faceplate
Step-by-Step
- Cut the powerFlip the breaker for that switch off at the panel. Test the switch — the light should not come on.
- Remove the cover and screwsUnscrew the wall plate, then the two screws holding the switch to the box. Gently pull the switch out.
- Confirm power is offHold a non-contact voltage tester near each wire. No beep, no light — you're safe to continue.
- Note the wiringSnap a photo of the existing wiring. A single-pole switch will have a hot, a switched leg, and usually a ground.
- Transfer the wiresLoosen the screws on the old switch, free the wires, and connect them to the matching terminals on the new switch.
- Tuck and mountFold the wires neatly into the box, screw the switch to the box, and reinstall the faceplate.
- Restore power and testTurn the breaker back on and flip the switch. The light should respond instantly.
