How to Install a Shower Head
Swapping a shower head is one of the fastest upgrades in the house. You don't even need to turn off the water — just unscrew the old one and screw on the new.

What You'll Need
Adjustable wrench or channel locks
Plumber's (Teflon) tape
Clean rag
Soft cloth to protect chrome
Step-by-Step
Remove the old headHold the shower arm steady with one wrench and turn the head counterclockwise with the other. Hand-loosen the rest of the way.
Clean the threadsWipe old tape and mineral buildup off the shower arm threads. They should look clean and bare.
Apply plumber's tapeWrap 2–3 turns of plumber's tape clockwise around the threads. Press it firmly into the grooves.
Hand-thread the new headScrew the new shower head on by hand, turning clockwise. Get it as tight as you can without tools.
Snug it with a wrenchGive it about a quarter-turn more with a wrench, just enough to seat the gasket. Don't crank on it.
Test for leaksTurn on the shower and check for drips where the head meets the arm. If it leaks, remove, re-tape, and reinstall.
Pro tipWrap the shower arm in a soft cloth before you grip it with pliers. It keeps the finish from getting scratched.
